This record group consists of various records of the Michigan Department of the Grand Army of the Republic. The record group includes: records accumulated by the department secretary (ca. 1866-1957), including accounts of Soldier's Home, Sons of Union Veterans and Grand Army of the Republic; records of organization of the Dept. of Michigan (1878-79); semi-annual report of the Assistant Adjutant General of the Department of Michigan (1895-1911); semi-annual report of the Assistant Quartermaster General of the Dept. of Michigan (1892-1919); record of membership of posts (n.d.); resolutions adopted by the 29th Department Encampment relating to Russell A. Alger, post department commander, who died January 24, 1907 (1907); index to members (n.d.); letters out from Assistant Adjutant General (1903-08); and supply book (1904-15). Also includes records accumulated by the Department Secretary (Box 77), dating 1861 to 1957.

The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was organized at Decatur, Illinois on April 6, 1866 by Dr. B.F. Stephenson. All honorably discharged soldiers, sailors or marines of the United States volunteers or regular armed forces were eligible for membership. The GAR went through turbulent times during it's early years over political issues and internal problems.
